City centre toilets reopen

City centre toilets reopen

The toilets in Pavilion Gardens have finally reopened after closing more than 18 months ago.

The block was among several closed in autumn 2022 because of rising costs, but while others reopened, staffing issues meant these stayed closed.

Persistent antisocial behaviour means a consistent security presence is needed, which last year’s budget could not stretch to.

But now, enough staff have be recruited to have two attendants there seven days a week.

Councillor Tim Rowkins, chairs the council’s City Environment, South Downs and the Sea Committee, tweeted: “Very pleased to say that we have reopened the public toilets at Royal Pavilion Gardens.

“They will be available seven days a week, from 10am-6pm. We are still recruiting staff and the aim is to expand the hours as soon as possible.”

Council officials said the 2022 were partly due to having to increase pay when the cleaning service was brought in house, and partly because of the legacy of years of underinvestment in maintenance.

The Pavilion Garden toilets are set to be completely rebuilt as part of a multi-million pound refurb of Pavilion Gardens. Lottery funding has been secured, and a planning application, which also includes putting up a fence around the gardens, is pending.

Excellent. Could say about time too. As it happened got collared by a couple of out of towners looking for a loo, sent them to ‘spoons.
Now they can use ( hopefully ) clean toilets.

Good. But we shouldn’t be grateful for what shouldn’t have happened in the first place. Nothing extra has been given to our city here.

The council spent a quarter of a million pounds on just one of these conveniences in there refurbishment programme, just to close them when they felt like it,they should Not be in charge of such a an important resource, they are not exactly the full shilling when it comes to being prudent with our money, yes our money that’s generated from us,we ought to have more of a say to how and where its spent, and a recovery programme adopted to collect OUR DEBTS.

Good news …. At last we have a Labour council that gets things done …. The City centre is looking much tidier and cleaner generally …. Thank you Brighton and Hove City Council.

I think the people who actually need credit are the people who campaigned for years and years about issues with the toilets in Pavilion Gardens, not politicians on this one – there were huge problems under the Healthmatic contract under the last Labour administration (https://www.theargus.co.uk/news/16193857.676-000-clean-brighton-hoves-disgusting-toilets/), and dreadful ASB under the Greens. Great news they’re back open – but it’s more of a case of residents and traders getting things done TBH.

I thought the new Pavilion Trust had taken over this building and were going to replace them with brand new facilities?
Either way it’s good they have been reopened, they should never have been closed in the first place.
Just keep them open, keep them clean, and keep them safe. Then finally we can all talk about something else.

Was it only the blokes toilets that were closed then as in the picture it looks that way anyway as women’s toilets don’t have urinals in them only men’s toilets do if so men can pee in the brushes outside or at a tree so they don’t really need a toilet to be honest Women need toilets more then men also if the women toilets where closed too then they should off showed the women toilets in the picture too to make it more clear as to which toilets where closed in the Gardens.

It’s good to see these reopened, as there seems to be a strong voice asking for this to happen. I remain a bit concerned about ASB and drug-related behaviour public toilets tend to be associated with, however, the 24/7 security should help to mitigate this.
