From Gak to Yak – dungaree shop takes over former guitar store

A colourful dungaree shop is taking over part of the former home of Brighton guitar store Gak.

Lucy and Yak is set to make the move from its existing store in Kensington Gardens to North Road at the beginning of next month.

Meanwhile, sock retailer Socktopus is opening in the other half of the former Gak store this month. moving from its former home in Bond Street.

Flude Property Consultants, which oversaw the lettings, said both units had offers from multiple retailers.

The Socktopus shop is being painted blue, while the Lucy and Yak shop is set to be painted with a mural by local artist Alice Humphreys.

Lucy Greenwood, co-founder of Lucy and Yak, said: “When we first brought the brand to Brighton we opened our first shop on the corner of Tidy Street before relocating to Kensington Gardens.

“This space became our first official little pink shop as well as the office for our product and marketing teams – it feels like the start of a new chapter moving to North Road.

“Our retail teams are excited to have more space to showcase our products which will now be on one floor instead of two, as well as wider space to host more events.”

Is it because they wanted to brew up some “mural” magic while keeping things “aqua”-fied!

You know, in about a decade when pop music is worse than it already is now (a playground for nepo babies where it takes a dozen mediocre songwriters to make a bland “hit” rather than one strong song from a great writer) I’m sure people will look back to music stores like this closing and being replaced with what will probably become a revolving door of boring retailers as part of the reason.

I’m going to take my guitar there and ask their advice on which dungarees and socks go with it best.
