Brighton man jailed for 10 ten years for rape and sex attacks

Sam Soyoye

A man has been jailed for 10 years for raping a woman at his home in Brighton and sexually assaulting another.

Sam Soyoye, 32, of Windsor Street, Brighton, was jailed by Judge Christine Laing, the honorary recorder of Brighton and Hove, at Lewes Crown Court today (Thursday 6 November).

Soyoye was convicted of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault by a jury at Lewes on Wednesday 3 September, having denied all the charges.

Chetna Patel, prosecuting, told the jury that Soyoye had targeted two women, unknown to each other, and attacked them in separate incidents after meeting them in Brighton.

In June last year, he invited a woman back to his home in the early hours where he raped her.

And in September last year, he invited another woman back to his address and sexually assaulted her too.

A third woman had reported being raped in May last year and Soyoye was interviewed by officers who were investigating the allegation but in that case he faced no further action.

When the jury convicted Soyoye, detective Aimee Collier, from the Brighton Investigations Unit, said: “It is testament to the brave and courageous victims who came forward to report these horrendous offences that we have today seen a guilty verdict.”

Today, she said: “This sentencing reflects the seriousness of the crimes and the lasting impact they have had on the victims.

“We would like to commend the bravery of both women in coming forward and supporting the investigation.

“Sussex Police remains committed to investigating all reports of rape and sexual assault and ensuring victims receive the support and justice they deserve.”

Question did the woman in June report her rape? If she did why was this animal free to rape on two later occasions over the course of 3 months?

Since when has rape been classed as a minor crime, only worthy of a 10 year sentence, out in a fraction of that time?

Under Clause 1 of the IPSO Editors’ Code of Practice, the press must take care not to publish information that’s inaccurate, misleading or distorted. Calling someone a “Brighton man” when their only connection is residence — especially if similar stories label others by nationality

Residence would make it perfectly apt to describe him as a ‘Brighton Man’. Perhaps you are simply dressing up what you really want to write, because what you really want to write is cheap and unnecessary?
