A woman who was arrested by counter-terror police in Brighton last week has been released without charge.
The 27-year-old from Hailsham was one of four people questione by officers from Counter Terrorism Policing South East (CTPSE) in raids on Thursday.
The arrests were part of a planned intelligence-led operation into extreme right-wing terrorism.
Two of those – men aged 36 and 33, both from Eastbourne and arrested under section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000, remain in custody as enquiries continue..
The fourth, a 41-year-old man from Eastbourne, has also been released with no further action.
Sussex Police appear to have a talent for wasting Police time and resources on non-crimes these days. Is it time for compulsory Police training in free speech and freedom of expression to prevent further abuses of overstretched police and court time WE are paying for? Particularly if the Jury system is about to be swept away? This nonsense is eroding public confidence in the Police. People are allowed to have their own politics and opinions as long as they are not hurting others, just as those who disagree with them are allowed to be offended.
Nobody was arrested here for expressing an opinion. Counter terror arrests require reasonable suspicion of involvement in terrorism offences, which is a completely different legal framework from free speech issues. Intelligence-led operations often involve detaining several individuals to secure evidence or prevent destruction of material, and it is entirely normal that some will be released without charge once inquiries are complete. That’s the safeguard working, not the police wasting time. Calling terrorism investigations non-crimes is simply incorrect.
