Brighton slimmers offer their support to bra recycling scheme

Slimmers from Brighton and Hove have given their support to a recycling scheme by ditching bras that no longer fit them.

Members of Slimming World have donated 460 bras in just one month as the pounds fell away and they dropped dress sizes.

Mandy Crew, Slimming World’s Patcham consultant and team developer, said: “When I announced that we would be supporting the council’s bra recycling scheme, I expected a good response.

“But members have exceeded all my expectations bringing in 460 bras in just one month.

“It’s great to know that women in other countries will benefit from these bras that my successful slimmers are more than happy to get rid of.”

Dee Simson, deputy leader of Brighton and Hove City Council, said: “It’s another win-win situation.

“As these slimmers are losing weight, getting healthier and casting off their old clothes, they are helping others at the same time.”

The council began its bra recycling scheme last summer by installing bright pink collection banks across the city.

It later expanded the scheme by offering smaller cardboard banks for shops and offices.

Every bra donated earns cash for local breast cancer charity the Pink Dolphin Appeal which raises money for the Park Centre for Breast Care in Brighton.

The council runs the scheme in partnership with national textile recycling company BCR Global.

The bras are transported, along with other clothing, to African and Eastern European countries as well as Pakistan.

There they are repaired if necessary and sold, providing business opportunities and affordable clothing.

Bra banks can be found at

  • St John’s Place near the Floral Clock in Hove
  • King Alfred Leisure Centre
  • Sainsbury’s West Hove
  • Asda car park at Brighton Marina
  • Chalky Road opposite Portslade Community College
  • The Drove entrance to Preston Park
  • Queen’s Park Terrace
