Brighton supermarket seeks to extend drinks licence

A Brighton supermarket has asked the council to be allowed to sell alcohol from 6am to 11pm seven days a week.

Morrisons in St James’s Street, Brighton, is currently open from 8am to 9pm from Monday to Saturday and from 11am to 5pm on Sundays.

It has applied to Brighton and Hove City Council to extend its opening hours from6am to 11pm every day of the week.

And it wants to be able to sell alcoholic drinks whenever the store is open.

The Kemp Town branch of Tesco, also in St James’s Street, has an alcohol licence from noon to 10pm.

Ben Duncan, the Green councillor for Queen’s Park, is one of the ward councillors.

He said that he would oppose the application.

He said: “To extend the licence would be likely to increase crime and disorder as well as increasing noise nuisance and have a negative impact on public safety, all licencing objectives as defined in the relevant legislation.

“I think Morrisons are seeking to see what they can get away with as much as anything else, and, as the store falls into the city’s cumulative impact area, I don’t see how the application can be granted.

“But the more objections the council receives, the more likely it is to reject the application.”

He is encouraging members of the St James’s Street Area Local Action Team to send in their views.

Objectors have until Friday 15 October to make their views known.

They can object via the council’s website www.brighton-hove.gov.uk or write to: The Assistant Director of Public Safety, Health and Safety and Licensing, Brighton and Hove City Council, Bartholomew House, Bartholomew Square, Brighton, BN1 1JP.
