Brighton galleries offer creative residencies

Two Brighton galleries are offering creative residencies this year.

Fabrica is on the lookout for an artist-in-residence and a writer-in-residence.

The gallery has created the roles as part of its Time and Place project.

Time and Place is an EU-funded project exploring the cultural, historical and environmental heritage of the Channel region of south east England and Nord-Pas de Calais and Normandy in France.

The artist is to work on the idea of Monument, which could mean looking at contemporary art in the region around that theme or taking inspiration from historical topics such as the WWI centenary or war memorials.

The theme for the writer will be Aftermath, exploring the heritage of art, war, conflict, death, migration and settlement.

The closing date for applications is Monday 17 March and the residencies will run from April to December 2014.

Fabrica is based in a Grade II-listed former Regency church on the corner of Ship Street and Duke Street.

The gallery is also looking for up to three trustees to join the board.

The trustee positions are voluntary and involve attending four board meetings per year.

Applications are also open at the Lighthouse in Kensington Street for its studio residencies and Guiding Lights programme.

Lighthouse is a digital culture agency that supports, commissions and exhibits work by artists and filmmakers.

The Lighthouse studio residencies are multi-disciplinary three month residencies where practitioners from different fields can collaborate around the theme of digital culture.

Previous residents have included artists, designers, software developers, anthropologists, filmmakers, researchers and activists.

The studio residencies run on a rolling basis, with the next one being 1 May to 31 July.

Guiding Lights is a film mentoring scheme, where budding writers, directors and producers are given nine months of one-to-one support by a leading figure in the industry.

The closing date is Wednesday 26 March for the studio residencies and Monday 31 March for Guiding Lights.

More information about all the positions can be found on the Lighthouse and Fabrica websites.
