The Brighton RNLI lifeboat crew rescued two people from the sea early this morning (Sunday 20 July) a few hundred yards south of West Street in Brighton.

One of the pair, a fully clothed woman believed to be in her early twenties, was reported to be in difficulty.

A partially clothed man, also in his twenties, had gone to help her, lifeboat operations manager Roger Cohen said. And he too seemed to be struggling.

Both appeared to have been drinking.

The lifeboat was called about at about 4.30am and reached the scene about 200 yards offshore within 15 minutes. The woman was swiftly given oxygen and both were taken ashore.

Mr Cohen said that the pair were handed over to a South East Coast Ambulance Service crew on the beach by West Street.

He said: “The message is that alcohol and the sea don’t mix.”

I work as a door supervisor on West Street and just before 04:30 the girls best friend come to me and my colleague telling us about her friend in the water, we had just finished our shift so we headed down to assist. The Police were already on the scene and the RNLI close behind, The RNLI puled them both out the water and got them to sure very quickly. Obviously the RNLI are an amazing organization and should be thanked for what they do but I also feel that if that guy had not got to this girl when he did she might not have made it. If anyone knows him I want to buy him a beer!

I am kinda unhappy with this story it is factually incorrect, I was the person that rescued the girl, the couple were nothing to do with me. I was on the beach having a BBQ when I became aware of a man screaming on the beach that he had lost his girlfriend in the sea, the police turned up were shining torches looking for her when I heard her scream. I swim in the sea everyday, the police tried to arrest me for going to save this girl. When I got to her past the second bouys she was going under, I pulled her up and pumped her stomach where she spewed water. I calmed het down and made my way back to shore with her. I was 34 of the way back when the rnli turned up where they took over the rescue. The girl would be dead had I not disobeyed the police. I am not after recognition it just upsets me a little
after my selfless act of courage to have the facts so blatantly wrong.
