Travellers face eviction from four Brighton sites

Travellers and people living in vans are facing eviction from four sites in Brighton in the coming few days.

Brighton and Hove City Council said that it would be asking for court orders to enable evictions to take place.

The sites are

  • Preston Park
  • land next to Devil’s Dyke Road
  • Madeira Drive, at Black Rock
  • land north of Warren Road

An update on the council’s website today (Monday 19 January) said that there was an unauthorised encampment of travellers and Gypsies on land in Preston Park.

The council said: “We visited this site with the police earlier today. We are now seeking possession of this land.

“We will be applying to the county court for a possession order which will enable us to arrange for an eviction to be carried out, should the families fail to leave the site voluntarily.”

The council also said that van dwellers had set up an unauthorised encampment off Devil’s Dyke Road. It said: “We have visited this site with the police. We are now seeking possession of this land.

“We will be applying to the county court for a possession order which will enable us to arrange for an eviction to be carried out, should the occupants fail to leave the site voluntarily.”

The travellers parked in Madeira Drive, at Black Rock, have been served with notices under section 77 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994, directing them to move.

The council said: “These have failed to move and we will be applying for court orders in the magistrates’ court this week.”

The council also said that van dwellers were parked on land north of Warren Road, adding: “We have visited this site with the police. We are now seeking possession of this land.

“We will be applying to the county court for a possession order which will enable us to arrange for an eviction to be carried out, should the occupants fail to leave the site voluntarily.”

These ‘Travellers’ should never have been classified as an ethnic group. In the Republic of Ireland where they originate from, they are classified as a social group. In this vein they have been banned from pitching up all over the country causing untold damage and upsetting the local population. This is why they have ended up on our doorstep – the land of all the world’s waifs and strays. They should be reclassified and sent packing back to the Republic of Ireland.
