Brighton and Hove Albion boss appoints former Nottingham Forest manager as assistant

Colin Calderwood

Brighton and Hove Albion boss Chris Hughton has appointed former Scottish international Colin Calderwood as his assistant manager and confirmed his first team and backroom team.

Calderwood’s first match will be the home fixture on Saturday (7 February) against his old club Nottingham Forest where he was in charge for two and a half years.

He was Hughton’s assistant at Newcastle United, Birmingham City and Norwich City. The former Tottenham Hotspur defender, who turned 50 last month, has also managed Hibernian and Northampton Town.

The Scot played more than 600 league matches for Mansfield Town, Swindon Town, Spurs, Aston Villa, Forest and Notts County. And he won 36 international caps during his 20-year playing career.

Hughton has this afternoon confirmed that Nathan Jones will be the first-team coach and Antti Niemi will be the goalkeeping coach.

The other members of his backroom team are coach Joaquin Gomez, Adam Brett, head of medical services, and Tom Barnden, fitness coach.

Hughton said: “It was always my intention to bring somebody in to work alongside myself and Nathan.

“What I wanted to do is give myself some time to get to know the staff here – not only the coaching staff but also the backroom team – before finalising that decision.

“I’m delighted Colin is coming in. He is someone I have worked with before, and I know him well, and we wanted to bring someone in of Colin’s experience.

“I know that he will work well with the existing coaching staff at the club and I think he’ll be a very good addition to the coaching team.”
