Brighton man, 20, convicted of trying to murder two women

A Brighton man has been banned from driving after caught over the limit on the A23 during the morning rush hour.

James Slaney, 50, of Roundhill Crescent, Brighton, was arrested at 8.45am on Thursday 4 December.

Slaney was stopped at a roadside check in Preston Road, Brighton, in his Rover 416i and found to have 95 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit is 80mg.

He admitted drink driving when he appeared at Brighton Magistrates’ Court.

He was given a 12-month ban – with the chance to get his licence back after nine months if he completes an approved course, costing no more than £250.

Slaney was also ordered to pay a £737 fine, £85 costs and a £74 victim surcharge.

Sussex Police said that 90 people had so far been convicted after being arrested as part of Operation Dragonfly, the force’s annual December drink and drug driving crackdown.

The force said: “If you drive the morning after having a few drinks, you are likely to still be over the limit.

“If you are having a drink, think about where you need to go the next day and either make arrangements to get a lift, walk or use public transport to get there.

“Drink driving could cost you your licence, hundreds of pounds in fines, increased insurance premiums and even your liberty. It is not worth the risk.”
