Brighton & Hove Albion : Seagulls lose at Wigan and now peer into the relegation abyss

Wigan Atheltic 2 Brighton & Hove Albion 1

Albion lost perhaps the most crucial match of the season so far,  after mix up between Dale Stephens and David Stockdale .

The Albion had a chance to go in front almost straight away from kick-off , but Craig Mackail -Smith’s shot after racing clear , was saved by ex-England keeper Scott Carson.

Stephens ,  Kazenga Lua Lua and Beram Kayal all had chances to put Albion in front , but it was  Tim Chow who put the Latics ahead just before the half hour.

Albion still tried to lay siege to the Wigan goal in the second half and ten minutes in Dale Stephens became the first Seagulls player to score for 36 days after lashing home Danny Holla’s corner.

Lua Lua and Holla had great chances to put Albion in front,  but it was Wigan who appeared to be denied a clear penalty as Greg Halford dragged back Marc -Antoine Fortune . But it was Fortune who later hit in a cross that was deflected by Stephens and fumbled by Stockdale , which allowed James Perch to stab the ball home from virtually a yard out .

Albion now need to get something out of their remaining two games against 1st placed Watford and 3rd placed Middlesbrough to be sure of beating the drop.

Starting with Watford at The Amex next Saturday (25 April) with a 12:15 kick-off and live on Sky Sports .
