Brighton beach diggers do annual pebble sweep

The annual sweep of pebbles from the top of Brighton and Hove beach has left the shingle ready for the tourist season.

pebbles1Brighton and Hove City Council uses diggers to move tonnes of stones from the top of the beach towards the shore every spring.

A spokeswoman explained: “Every winter storms and winds change the profile of the beach, often leaving a steep slope down to the sea, so in spring each year we move tonnes of pebbles where needed to restore the beach ready for the summer.”

Ken Frost, director of seafront gallery OhSoSwedish who took these pictures, said: “It’s ironic that some years ago you would have been able see the steps that lead down to the beach from this level! They’ve long since been covered by the pebbles.”
