Whitehawk FC ask to follow in Albion's footsteps at Withdean

Whitehawk Football Club could be the next occupants of Withdean Stadium when Brighton and Hove Albion move to Falmer next year.

The council is considering a request from Whitehawk to use the ground for two years when the Seagulls move to the Amex Community Stadium in June.

Whitehawk need to make improvements to their regular home ground at East Brighton Park after being promoted to the Ryman League Division One South.

The move to Withdean would be on condition that planning permission and funding were secured.

A decision is expected at one of the regular meetings led by the council’s cabinet member for culture Councillor David Smith on Tuesday 7 December.

He is also expected to approve the submission of a planning application to retain permanently certain improvements at Withdean which were made by the Albion with temporary consent.

These include the West Stand, changing rooms and additional car parking.

Councillor Smith said: “In principle we want to support Whitehawk in the same way we supported the Albion.

“So I’m giving it careful thought.

“We need to make sure the athletics clubs can still use the ground for training and competitions.

“It seems to make sense to try to keep permanently the many improvements given temporary permission.

“The car park would help stop parking spilling over into residential streets on busy days.”
