Crowds head to Lewes Bonfire despite the damp

Thousands of people from Brighton and Hove have gone to the Lewes Bonfire celebrations despite the damp weather.

Forecasts suggested that the rain would peter out as the evening wore on.

Staff at Brighton Station started putting out the crowd control barriers just after 2.30pm this afternoon (Thursday 5 November). Queuing controls were due to be in place from 4pm at Brighton, London Road, Moulsecoomb and Falmer stations.

Train operator Southern said that there were no extra services running this evening, adding: “Please allow plenty of time in order to make your last train home.”

Brighton and Hove Buses said that its services, including the 28 and 29, would be diverted because of road closures.

In Lewes itself on-street parking was suspended along the routes of the bonfire societies’ processions from 2pm with roads closing to traffic from 5pm until, mostly, 1am. A few roads shut at 7pm and a few others will not reopen until 3am.

The A27 and A26 remain open to through traffic.

The first processions are due to start at about 7.40pm and the bonfires begin at various sites from about 9.30pm with fireworks of course.

Members of Lewes Borough Bonfire Society are planning to burn a record 50ft guy.

And among the effigies this year are Prime Minister David Cameron, complete with a pig’s head, TV presenter Jeremy Clarkson and suspended football chief Sepp Blatter.
