Crowds expected in Brighton and Hove to mark 100th anniversary of World War I

A series of services and commemorations are due to be held today (Sunday 8 November) to mark Remembrance Sunday.

The weather is expected to stay dry. The temperatures are forecast to be mild although the windy conditions may make the air feel a bit chilly at times.

The mayor, Councillor Lynda Hyde, has already attended a blessing in the Garden of Remembrance at the Old Steine War Memorial on Thursday (5 November).

This morning she will be back there for the main Brighton parade and service. The parade leaves Madeira Drive shortly before 11am when the wreath-laying ceremony is due to start. Anyone wishing to attend is asked to be in place by 10.55am.

Earlier, at 9am, a short service is scheduled to take place at the Royal Sussex Regiment Memorial, in Regency Square, Brighton, organised by the Royal Sussex Regimental Association.

The deputy mayor, Councillor Pete West, is due to represent Brighton and Hove City Council at the Portslade Service of Remembrance at the Easthill Park Memorial, in Portslade, starting at 11am.

And Councillor Denise Cobb, the former mayor, will represent the council at two short wreath-laying ceremonies in Hove Cemetery, Old Shoreham Road.

The first of the two events is due to take place at the North Gate Memorial at 11am, followed by the same ceremony at the South Gate Memorial.

In the afternoon the main ceremony and service in Hove is due to start with a parade leaving Hove Town Hall at 2.10pm.

A wreath-laying ceremony at the War Memorial, in Grand Avenue, Hove, will be followed by a service at All Saints Church, in The Drive, Hove, at 3pm.

At 4.15pm the Brighton and Hove Branch of the Association of Jewish Ex-Servicemen and Women are to hold a service at the Hove Hebrew Congregation in Holland Road.

On Wednesday (11 November) a two-minute silence will mark Armistice Day, with the mayor observing the silence at Hove War Memorial and the deputy mayor at the Old Steine War Memorial in Brighton.
