Brighton’s French community to hold minute’s silence this lunchtime

A minute’s silence in remembrance of those killed and support of those injured in Friday’s Paris attacks is to be observed outside Brighton Town Hall today.

Scores of people intend assembling in Bartholomew Square at 1pm for the vigil, organised via the Francais a Brighton & Hove group on Facebook.

Organiser Hadrien Lopez said: “In support of victims and injured attacks in Paris, I invite you to come and observe a minute of silence this Sunday, November 15, 2015 peacefully.”

Meanwhile, Sussex Police urged people to remain vigilant following the attacks, and the arrest of a man at Gatwick yesterday for leaving an air rifle in the airport yesterday morning. Jerome Chauris, 41, unemployed and of no fixed address, but from Vendôme, France, has now been charged with possessing a dangerous article (an air rifle weapon) in any part of an aerodrome (Aviation Security Act 1982) and possessing a knife blade/sharp pointed article (a lock knife) in a public place (Criminal Justice Act 1988). He has been remanded in custody to appear at Crawley Magistrates’ Court on Monday morning (November 16).

Brighton and Hove stands in solidarity with Paris tonight. Thoughts with all those who have died or been injured in these appalling attacks.

Commenting on the attacks in France on Friday evening (November 13) Deputy Chief Constable Olivia Pinkney said: “Sussex Police’s thoughts are with the victims and families of those affected by the terrorist attacks in France in which, according to current reports, more than 120 people tragically lost their lives.

“Our thoughts are also with all the French people and our colleagues in Paris who are dealing with this horrific situation.

“We are continuing to monitor the situation following the attacks. We would urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour or activity straightaway by calling the confidential anti-terrorist hotline on 0800 789 321 or 999 in an emergency.”
