A police officer who dealt with the aftermath of the Grand hotel bomb in Brighton has died.
Jonathan Woods, a retired Metropolitan Police detective, suffered a form of cancer linked to asbestos that he is believed to have breathed in after the blast in 1984.
Mr Woods was an anti-terror officer who suffered mesothelioma, caused by asbestos fibres in the lungs.
According to The Sun newspaper, he died in a French hospital at the weekend aged in his late sixties. He retired from the Met in 2002.
The former detective helped sift through the rubble after the IRA bombed the seafront hotel in an attempt to kill the Conservative Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and the cabinet. The attack claimed five lives and left 39 others injured.
In August Mr Woods sued the Met and Sussex Police for not protecting him properly while he worked on the investigation. His surviving family members intend to continue with the claim.
