Four Brighton and Hove drink drive cases in first week of police crackdown

Three drivers from Brighton and Hove have been banned from the road after being caught drink driving.

Antonio Souza, 43, a delivery man, of Erroll Road, Hove, was arrested in Kingsway, Hove, on Christmas Day (Friday 25 December). He was charged with driving with 97 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of his breath. The legal limit is 35 micrograms.

He pleaded guilty to drink driving at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Monday 18 January and was banned from driving for 25 months. He was also ordered to pay a £747 fine, £85 costs and a £75 victim surcharge. He also admitted failing to surrender to custody for which he was fined £93.

Joshua Taylor, 25, a manager, of Portland Road, Hove, was arrested in Stoneleigh Avenue, Brighton, also on Christmas Day. He was charged with driving with 62 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of his breath.

He pleaded guilty to drink driving at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Monday 11 January and was banned from driving for 17 months. He was also ordered to pay a £120 fine, £85 costs and a £20 victim surcharge.

A charge of no insurance was dismissed due to insufficient evidence.

Sarah Richards, 34, unemployed, of Melrose Close, Hollingdean, was arrested in Union Road, Brighton, on Saturday 26 December. She was charged with driving with 57 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of her breath.

She pleaded guilty to drink driving at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Monday 11 January and was banned from driving for 12 months. She was also ordered to pay a £120 fine, £85 costs and a £20 victim surcharge.

Officers from Sussex Police arrested a further 21 motorists on suspicion of drink and drug driving offences in the first three days of the new year.

This brings the total number of people convicted since the annual Christmas drink and drug driving crackdown began on Tuesday 1 December to 81.
