Albion came back from being a goal behind to score a crucial victory in the second city.
A headed equaliser from centre back Connor Goldson, his first goal for the club, drew Albion level on 30 minutes. Kyle Lafferty had put Birmingham ahead after David Stockdale uncharacteristically fumbled a cross into his path.
The Seagulls’ winner came early in second half when Brighton-born defender Lewis Dunk rose highest to head home.
Albion stay third, but are now just two points behind leaders Burnley and one point behind Middlesbrough in second. Boro, however, have a game in hand.
Albion take on Nottingham Forest next Monday (11 April) at the City Ground. The match will be shown live on Sky Sports.
