Hundreds of people assembled in Brighton this evening for a vigil in memory of the victims of the shootings at a gay club in Orlando.
The vigil is one of many ways Brighton and Hove, home to one of the UK’s largest gay communities, is marking yesterday’s hate attack.
About 400 people came to the New Steine at 7.30pm to light candles, lay flowers and stand together in solidarity.
Among those addressing the throngs were council leader Warren Morgan, Mayor Pete West and Brighton and Hove borough commander Chief Superintendent Nev Kemp.
Cllr Morgan said: “This was a brutal and murderous attack on our values and on Brighton and Hove’s values.
“Those who attack our values will not win. We will get through this together.”
Green convenor Phelim Mac Cafferty, who also addressed the vigil, said afterwards: “To those who seek to strike us we stand tonight defiant against you.
“To those who seek to attack us, we will not let you dim our community spirit. We shall be brighter and louder and prouder.”
