Labour picked its candidate for the East Brighton by-election this afternoon (Saturday 18 June).
Lloyd Russell-Moyle, who chairs the Brighton, Hove and District Labour Party, was chosen as the Labour and Co-operative Party candidate in place of Maggie Barradell who is standing down for family reasons.
Mr Russell-Moyle, 29, of Eastern Road, Brighton, who beat his party colleague Sunny Choudhury for the selection, said: “I’m delighted to have the chance to represent the ward that I’ve lived in for a number of years and the ward that – like most Brightonians – I was born in.
“It’s one of the most diverse wards in the city. It has challenges but fantastic community spirit.”
Council leader and East Brighton Ward councillor Warren Morgan said: “I’m delighted that local resident and experienced campaigner Lloyd Russell-Moyle has been chosen by East Brighton Labour members to contest the by-election.
“I’ve worked with him closely over the past year while he has chaired the city party and he brings a wealth of experience that will be invaluable on the city council if he’s successful in the forthcoming poll.”
Mr Russell-Moyle, who has a degree in peace studies from Bradford University, works as a consultant to the United Nations on poverty and young people.
The date has yet to be set for the by-election but it is expected to be held on the last Thursday in July or the first or second Thursday in August.
