Shoreham air crash inquest likely to be delayed

Shoreham air crash investigators publish second report

The Shoreham air crash inquest looks likely to be delayed, according to the West Sussex coroner.

Penelope Schofield had hoped to hold a review on Monday 19 September but will probably postpone it until after a High Court hearing in October.

At the High Court hearing a judge will be asked to decide whether Sussex Police can be given evidence gathered by the Air Accidents Investigation Branch.

The coroner is holding a combined inquest into the deaths of the 11 men killed when a vintage Hawker Hunter crashed during a display at the Shoreham air show last August.

Incredibly, the pilot, Andrew Hill, 51, survived crashing on to traffic on the A27 next to the airport.

Sussex Police officers are investigating Mr Hill for manslaughter and any prosecution would take place before the inquest.

On Monday (22 August), on the anniversary of the disaster, a minute’s silence was held.

  • The eleven men who died were
  • Maurice Abrahams, 76, a wedding chauffeur, of The Brow, Woodingdean
  • Dylan Archer, 42, an IT consultant, of Frederick Street, Brighton
  • Richard Smith, 26, a marketing and web development specialist, of Lansdowne Square, Hove
  • Tony Brightwell, 53, an NHS care manager, of Marmion Road, Hove
  • Matt Grimstone, 23, a groundsman for Brighton and Hove Albion and Worthing United footballer, of Osborne Road, Brighton
  • Jacob Schilt, 23, a delivery driver and fellow Worthing United footballer, of The Close, Brighton
  • Graham Mallinson, 72, a retired engineer, from Newick, near Lewes
  • Daniele Polito, 23, a builder, from Goring
  • Matt Jones, 24, a labourer and personal trainer, from Littlehampton
  • Mark Reeves, 53, a computer-aided design technician, from Seaford
  • Mark Trussler, 54, a window cleaner and general builder, from Worthing

I’ve seen an interesting development regarding the statement contained in the AAIB third interim report:

‘The flying display community in the UK are a small group of individuals who are often well known to each other and there will always be conflicts of interest.’

The question being raised for the eventual inquest is did the BADA play a simular role at Shoreham to the Masons at Hillsborough?
