An ambitious programme to help more people find jobs and apprenticeships was backed this evening (Thursday 22 September) by members of Brighton and Hove City Council.
The City Employment and Skills Plan 2016-20 aims to
- increase apprenticeships by at least 1,000 new starts in 1,000 days
- support 2,000 long-term unemployed people to move into sustainable employment
- secure 3,000 opportunities to help people develop their skills, experience and career through the “Employer Pledge”
The target of 1,000 more apprenticeships was set by the Greater Brighton Employer Skills Task Force in March during Apprenticeship Week.
More than 100 pledges of apprenticeships were made at an event on the day that the task force’s report was published.
A report to the council’s Economic Development and Culture Committee spelt out a series of actions, some of which rely on employers from the private sector.
A Greater Brighton Employer Brokerage was being set up.
And City College Brighton and Hove and the Brighton Aldridge Community Academy (BACA) were also central to some of this work.
The council’s head of skills and employment Rachel Carter said that there would be progress reviews during the four-year term of the plan.
