Police donate cash to new Brighton scout group

Members of the 55th Brighton (Moulsecoomb) Scout Group

A new scout group in Brighton is to be given £300 by Sussex Police from the proceeds of selling confiscated property, the force said.

The money will help the 55th Brighton (Moulsecoomb) Scout Group to fund the use of a venue and equipment.

A spokesman for the group’s cub pack said: “Young people from this area now have a massive opportunity to join our new group who offer such important life skills and fun activities.

“This funding will help us continue to offer that support. Thank you so much from us all.”

The donation comes from the Police Property Act Fund, made up of money received by the police from property sold after being confiscated by order of the courts.

PCSO Clare Cates said: “We are pleased to offer this funding to the 55th Brighton (Moulsecoomb) Scout Group. It is a great way to support a new group that offers such amazing activities to local young people.”

The group started in February with support from two local mums – Tracey Cox and Claire Brewer – and their team which includes students and staff from Brighton University and Sussex University.

It already has more than a dozen beavers – six and seven-year-olds – and more than 30 cubs, who join at eight and stay until they ten and a half.

They meet on Mondays at St George’s Hall Community Centre in Newick Road and hope to have a scout troop before long for youngsters up to the age of 14.

There are 20 scout groups in Brighton and Hove, with three explorer units for over 14s and one scout network for 18 to 25-year-olds.
