Crash closes A23 on the edge of Brighton just before rush hour

Hundreds of people from Brighton and Hove faced much longer journeys this morning after a rush-hour crash on the A27 between Drusillas Zoo and Polegate.

The two-car crash, which left one driver with serious injuries, has led to diversions, with the main road closed in both directions for hours.

Firefighters from East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service cut one person free from the wreckage.

The road closure and diversions have also affected people trying to reach work in Brighton and Hove this morning (Wednesday 7 December).

Sussex Police said: “Part of the A27 is currently closed following a two-vehicle collision at Wilmington.

“Police were called to the incident involving a red Nissan Almera and a silver BMW 3 Series shortly before 6am.

“The Nissan driver was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital with serious injuries and two other people have been treated for minor injuries by paramedics at the scene.

“The road is closed between Drusillas roundabout and the Polegate crossroads at present and is likely to remain so for several hours.

“Drivers are advised to avoid the area and take alternative routes. Bus companies have been informed.

“Anyone who saw what happened is asked to email collision.appeal@sussex.pnn.police.uk or call 101, quoting Operation Hayfield.”
