Portslade Aldridge Community Academy rated good by Ofsted

Education watchdog Ofsted has given a good report to four local schools in the past two months, members of Brighton and Hove City Council were told this afternoon (Monday 9 January).

The four were Aldrington C of E Primary School, Carden Primary School, St Bernadette’s Catholic Primary School and the Portslade Aldridge Community Academy (PACA).

Brighton and Hove City Council education official Ellen Mulvihill told the council’s Children, Young People and Skills Committee that 94.2 per cent of local primary schools were now good or outstanding. This compares with 90 per cent of schools nationally.

The figure for secondary schools was 70 per cent although this would rise to 80 per cent if the Brighton Aldridge Community Academy (BACA) was rated good. The figures compares with 78 per cent nationally.

BACA was inspected just under six weeks ago and is expected to hear from Ofsted imminently. At its previous full inspection two years ago Ofsted said that it “requires improvement”.

PACA was previously rated as “requires improvement” by Ofsted but is now good – the second best of Ofsted’s four gradings.

Councillor Emma Daniel praised heads and teachers and Councillor Tom Bewick, who chairs the committee, said: “We have a very strong school improvement team.”

He said that he was proud of the performance of local primary schools and added: “If Tatler magazine has started taking an interest in our schools, we must be doing something right.”

His comments followed the publication of the glossy society magazine’s list of its top 20 state secondary schools.

Tatler included Dorothy Stringer School in Brighton and praised another local secondary school, Cardinal Newman Catholic School, and two primaries – St Andrew’s C of E Primary School and Westdene Primary School.
