Crowds turn out for Hove Carnival

Thousands of people turned out for Hove Carnival during the course of the day today (Monday 29 May) despite a couple of brief damp spells.

The annual event – formerly known as Hove Lions Day – took place in Hove Park with dozens of stalls, rides and attractions as well as arena displays, children’s entertainments and a funfair.

Among the local youth groups taking part were the 176 (Hove) Air Training Corps squadron and the 5th Hove Scouts.

The bank holiday carnival is a key fundraiser for the Martlets Hospice – and Antonia Shepherd, from the hospice’s events team, said beforehand: “Hove Carnival is our chance to celebrate our very supportive community. It’s always a calendar highlight that marks the start of summer.

“There will be something there for everyone. It promises to be a wonderful afternoon of fun for all the family.

“We’re hoping to raise lots of money again this year to support the care of our patients and their loved ones during some of the toughest times in their lives.”

The main arena attractions included the Galloping Acrobatics, an airborne tightrope and stunt bike show and the Stix Drummers.

There was also the popular annual dog show where the judges were on the lookout for the waggiest tail and the cleverest trick.
