General election latest – 14 candidates stand for the three seats in Brighton and Hove

The general election has prompted almost 10,000 people to register to vote in Brighton and Hove, taking the total to just over 200,000.

And even more people tried to register only to find that they were already on the electoral roll, Brighton and Hove City Council said.

The number of people who contacted the council to register totalled 26,685 but 17,546 of those were classed as duplicates – that is, they were on the register already.

Almost 3,000 overseas voters will be able to vote along with 115 homeless people who have a local connection.

The number of electors in registered in the Brighton Pavilion constituency is 75,486. In Hove it is 74,236. And in Brighton Kemptown the figure is 67,907.

The total of 217,629 is almost identical to the number at the 2015 general election. It is more than the 201,733 on the electoral roll in Brighton and Hove because the Brighton Kemptown constituency includes voters from the Lewes district – in part of Saltdean and in Peacehaven.

The number of postal votes is up by about 3,000 on two years ago with 42,964 requests across the three seats.

Those turning out in person will vote in one of the 127 polling stations in Brighton and Hove or the 10 in the Lewes district in the Brighton Kemptown constituency.

The candidates for Brighton Kemptown are
• Doktor Haze, also known as John Hayes Mabley, who describes himself as an alternative candidate
• Simon Kirby, Conservative, who won the seat in 2010 and 2015
• Lloyd Russell-Moyle, Labour
• Emily Tester, Liberal Democrat

The candidates for Brighton Pavilion are
• Ian Verdun Buchanan, UK Independence Party
• Solomon Curtis, Labour
• Caroline Lucas, Green, who won the seat in 2010 and 2015
• Emma Warman, Conservative,
• Nick Yeomans, an independent

The candidates for Hove are
• Kristy Adams, Conservative
• Carrie Hynds, Liberal Democrat
• Peter Kyle, who won the seat in 2015
• Phélim Mac Cafferty, Green
• Charley Sabel, an independent
