Brighton and Hove Albion player given six-month ban from driving

Dutch forward Elvis Manu has left Brighton and Hove Albion on a free transfer even though he has a year left to run on his contract.

The 23-year-old has signed a two-year deal with Turkish Super League side Gençlerbirliği SK.

Manu joined the Seagulls two years ago from the Dutch side Feyenoord for £1.5 million but played just 17 times, scoring three goals in cup competitions.

He had loan spells with Huddersfield Town and Dutch side Go Ahead Eagles – and earlier this year he was given a six-month driving ban for failing to say who was driving his Mercedes when it was filmed speeding.

Albion boss Chris Hughton said: “The competition for places in our forward areas means that it has been very difficult for Elvis to play the number of matches he would have liked.

“He has worked hard during his time here but, with his game time likely to be limited again, this is the best move for him.

“It gives him the chance to play regular football in a competitive Turkish Super League and I would like to wish him all the best for the future on behalf of everyone at the club.”

Another forward has left the Albion on loan. Under-23 striker Jordan Maguire-Drew has joined Lincoln City for the coming season.

Albion have the option of recalling the 19-year-old from the newly promoted League Two club during the January transfer window.

Under-23 coach Simon Rusk said: “This represents an excellent opportunity for Jordan to play more regular first-team football at a League Two club.

“He had a brilliant season with Dagenham and Redbridge in the National League and this move will only further aid him in his development.”

Maguire-Drew scored 15 goals in 46 games for the Daggers who lost to Forest Green Rovers in the play-offs.

The teenager also scored eight goals in six games to help Worthing win promotion to the Ryman Premier League via the play-offs at the end of the 2015-16 season.

The moves come just over a week after the club also said farewell to a third frontman, Chris O’Grady, who has moved to Chesterfield.

O’Grady agreed a two-year contract with the League Two club after three years at Albion where he made 38 appearances and scored three goals.

Chris Hughton said: “I am delighted for Chris. This is a great move for him.

“Unfortunately it didn’t quite work out for him here in terms of game time but his attitude and professionalism was always first class.

“On behalf of everyone at the club, I would like to thank him for all his efforts during his time with us and wish him all the very best for the future.”

O’Grady made his Albion debut in a 1-0 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday in August 2014. And he scored in the 3-2 FA Cup defeat to Arsenal in January 2015.
