More rail engineering works announced for August

More rail engineering works have been announced for August a day after commuters were warned to steer clear of London Bridge for eight days.

Now Southern has said that passengers should avoid changing trains at Clapham Junction while work is carried out at Waterloo.

Southern said today (Wednesday 12 July): “Southern passengers are being advised to avoid changing trains, especially at peak times, at Clapham Junction during major improvement work being carried out by Network Rail at London Waterloo from Saturday 5 August to Monday 28 August.

“Weekday Southern fast services heading into London Victoria also won’t be able to stop at Clapham Junction from 4pm to 8pm for the same period.

“The work (is) part of an £800 million scheme to increase peak-time capacity into London Waterloo by 30 per cent.

“The latest advice about Clapham Junction follows news that ten instead of nine platforms will now close for the work at London Waterloo which will make Clapham Junction platforms extremely busy.

“Southern is making the changes in the interests of passenger safety.”

Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR), which runs Southern and Thameslink, said: “Some of our trains will be particularly busy during August as a result of the much-needed improvement work at London Waterloo and we urge passengers to consider alternatives to avoid them if possible.

The last two days of the Waterloo work coincides with major work at London Bridge from Saturday 26 August to Saturday 2 September.

GTR said: “During this time, Southeastern will not operate to London Bridge, Cannon Street, Waterloo East or Charing Cross.

“Although Southern and Thameslink services don’t change, trains on many routes are expected to be much busier than normal.”
