Local volunteers who cleaned Brighton and Hove beaches said that they found a “shocking” amount of debris over just a couple of hours at the weekend.
More than 20 volunteers came together for the tenth annual Barefoot Wine Beach Rescue Project to help clean the beach, gathering bags full of rubbish discarded along Brighton and Hove seafront.
The volunteers were all rewarded with a glass of wine after taking part in the clean-up. The initiative prides itself on adding a competitive element to keeping the beach clean and the volunteers were split into groups, with the winners also receiving their very own bottle of wine.
The Barefoot Wine Beach Rescue Project will be running the project throughout the summer across the country with environmental charity Surfers Against Sewage.
Barefoot Wine and Bubbly’s European marketing director lga Senkina said: “We are very proud to have worked with 6,200 volunteers to collect 13 tonnes of litter from UK beaches over the last nine years.
“We are delighted to again encourage the Brighton community to come and help us clean their local beach and make the local area a better place for everyone to enjoy in the process.
“Of course, one of the day’s highlights is raising a toast with a glass of Barefoot Wine to celebrate the hard work of all the volunteers – cheers to that!”
