Deadline looms to renew tax credit claims for thousands across Brighton and Hove

Housing benefit overpayments total £164k for past year in Brighton and Hove, says auditor

More than 14,000 tax credit claimants across Brighton and Hove are being urged by Revenue and Customs to renew their claims this week or risk having their payments stopped.

Tax credits include working tax credits for those on low incomes – whether self-employed or employees – and child tax credits to help with the cost of childcare.

In the Brighton Kemptown parliamentary constituency there are 4,400 tax claimants. In Brighton Pavilion there are 4,600 in Brighton Pavilion and in Hove 5,400.

The renewal deadline is next Monday (31 July) and claimants must inform Revenue and Customs of any changes to their circumstances such as working hours, income, childcare costs or a new address.

All of this can be done online through the Gov.uk website or via the dedicated HMRC (Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs) app.

Revenue and Customs said: “The online renewals system is now easier and more accessible than ever before, allowing customers to track the process of their renewal, receive email confirmation once submitted and removing the need to scan or type in the barcode number from the back of the renewals pack.”

Revenue and Customs interim director general of customer services Rachel McLean said: “We’ve made some really helpful improvements this year to our online and app services to support our customers.

“We know life can be hectic so the start and stop feature allows customers to begin and complete their renewal on a day and time convenient for them.

“It’s fantastic that 32,000 people have used our app and 733,000 customers have already renewed their tax credits online.

“I urge customers who have yet to renew their tax credits to do so as soon as possible, thereby avoiding their payments being stopped. The 31 July deadline is fast approaching.”
