Demo planned for Brighton and Hove council tax showdown

Hundreds of protesters are expected to march on Brighton Town Hall for a demo this afternoon as part of the campaign against council spending cuts.

Two trade unions – Unison and the GMB – have organised demo to coincide with the annual Brighton and Hove City Council budget-setting meeting.

Their members and supporters are due to march from outside the council’s headquarters at King’s House in Grand Avenue, Hove, to Brighton Town Hall.

The march is scheduled to start at 3pm and to end in a protest rally at 4pm outside the council meeting.

The meeting is due to start at 4.30pm.

The unions say that the protest is in response to cuts totalling £28 million being out to the vote this afternoon.

They said: “These cuts will hit people across our city, with youth services and education support being among the worst affected areas.”

Phil Clarke, from the Brighton Stop the Cuts Coalition, said: “If councillors understand the cuts are damaging and unnecessary then they need to refuse to implement them and to build a mass campaign to prevent an imposed budget.

“This is the way to save jobs and services.”

The campaigners issued a statement which, among other things, said: “With the national debt having been higher for 200 of the last 250 years, tax evasion and avoidance running at an estimated £120 billion a year and as the richest 1000 people in the UK have increased their wealth by 33% in 2010, it is very clear these cuts are not driven by economic necessity.”
