MP urges ministers to move staff and offices to Brighton

An MP is urging ministers to move teams from their departments to Brighton.

Simon Kirby, the Conservative MP for Brighton Kemptown, has tabled a series of questions asking the government to bring jobs to the area.

Mr Kirby said: “I have been thinking more and more that with Brighton only being one hour away from London and having so many highly skilled and qualified people in the city and surrounding area that government departments should actively consider moving to Brighton.

“This would not only reduce the costs of premises in highly expensive Central London but would bring jobs to Brighton.

“As we have seen this week, although unemployment reduced over the course of the last year in the Brighton Kemptown constituency, there is still much to do.

“I raised the issue of moving jobs to Brighton with the Business Secretary (Vince Cable) last week and am now pressing other government departments on this matter.”

Mr Kirby has asked, among others, the Chancellor George Osborne, Health Secretary Andrew Lansley, Home Secretary Theresa May and International Development Secretary Andrew Mitchell to move staff and offices to Brighton.

The city is already home to public bodies such as the Pensions Regulator and regional offices of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA).

I think it is a great idea moving London offices to Brighton, this is a fast growing city and cheaper than London, employment needs to grow with it, many many London skilled people are here now.

Yes, I agree entirely! I’ve been working as a Civil Servant in London for the past 12 years and am now planning to move back to my hometown Brighton. I will have to commute at a great expense, unless I’m lucky enough to get one of the few Brighton Civil Service jobs available! I think I’m not the only one in this situation.
