1,000 homes planned for barracks and university site in Brighton

More than a thousand homes – including 750 student flats – are planned for a former Army barracks in Brighton.

Offices, shops and university buildings are also on the cards for the Preston Barracks site in Lewes Road, Brighton, including a new business school.

The scheme is likely to take in neighbouring sites which are part of Brighton University – Mithras House and the Moulsecoomb campus.

Brighton and Hove City Council has been working with the university for 18 months to prepare a planning brief for the site.

This sets out the scope of what is likely to win the approval of planners.

The planning brief is due to be presented to Councillor Geoffrey Theobald, the council’s cabinet member for environment, a meeting on Thursday (10 March).

He is expected to agree to a public consultation taking place, giving people a chance to comment on the planning brief over six weeks.

Professor Julian Crampton, Brighton University vice-chancellor, said: “This is a significant and positive step forward for a development that will support local businesses, the community and higher education in general.

“It is consistent with the university being an integral part of Brighton and Hove and we are delighted to be in partnership with the city council in this innovative project.”

Councillor Theobald said: “There is tremendous potential in the barracks site.

“It’s a large brownfield site quite near the city centre which could provide much-needed homes, jobs and academic facilities.

“It is also an opportunity to create a much more impressive gateway on a key route into the city.”
