Police arrest 44 drink or drug driving suspects in Brighton and Hove during annual Christmas crackdown

Annual summer crackdown on drink and drug drivers under way

Sussex Police arrested 44 people on suspicion of drink or drug driving in Brighton and Hove during the annual Christmas and new year crackdown.

Across the entire county, the force said that 195 drivers were arrested, slightly down on the figure of 208 for the same period last year.

Thirty of those 195 drivers were from Brighton and Hove while a number of those arrested in Brighton and Hove were from outside the city.

Sussex Police said: “Compared to last year, there has been a slight fall in the number of drivers stopped for drink and drug driving during December.

“The official breakdown of these statistics are as followed: 138 individuals were arrested for drink driving, 55 were arrested for drug driving and two people arrested for being in charge of a vehicle while over the limit (not driving but in the driver’s seat with keys in the ignition).

“Of these arrests so far, 23 have been convicted and a further 79 have been charged.

“Although the figures have reduced since last year, it is disappointing that so many people still decided to drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

“Although our dedicated campaign has ended, we will still proactively and reactively respond to reports of drink and drug drivers throughout the year and anyone who is caught will be dealt with robustly.”

Officers made the arrests from Friday 1 December to Monday 1 January inclusive.
