OAP punched in the face in busy shopping street

An OAP was punched in the face in front of shocked shoppers in a busy Hove street on Saturday, the first of two attacks there that day.

Police are seeking witnesses to the first incident in George Street, Hove, in which a 79-year-old man needed hospital treatment after he was punched in the face.

It happened shortly before 12.30pm on Saturday (13 January).

Subsequently, Robert James Quao , 33, of no fixed address, was arrested and charged with wounding and assault by beating.

He appeared before Brighton magistrates on Monday (15 January) and was remanded in custody to appear at Lewes Crown Court on Monday 12 February or such other date, time or place as the court directs.

Anyone who witnessed the incident in George Street is asked to contact police online or phone 101, quoting serial 538 of 13/01.

The second attack happened at about 7.30pm when a man was set upon by another man.

A police spokeswoman said: “Police were called to George Street in Hove at 7.30pm on Saturday (January 13) to a report of a fight.

“When officers arrived there was no-one fighting however a man was found with a cut and lump on his head. No arrests have been made, however it is believed the victim and suspect were known to each other.”

The photograph suggests this happened outside Wethersppon’s. Was this the case?

I don’t actually know Chris – this was just a file picture we had of George Street

You don’t like Wetherspoon’s being in Hove. Mind you, I now avoid that one, the one in West Street and at the Marina, but the “Spoons” in North Street, at Horsham, and the converted Opera House in Tunbridge Wells are much better.

Perhaps Robert James Quao had been intoxicated by the splendour of the Carnegie?

Witherspoon’s vary. The Hove one is rough but, yes, North Street is much better. Generally speaking, it is more enjoyable to have people round at home for drink and talk.

The second assault was outside The Spoon.

The inebriated victim had been making prejudicial comments. Assaulter has been banned which is a shame.

Shouldn’t have hit the old boy, as he isn’t fully right in the head (experience suggests that it’s purely down to drinking too much) and mumbles and laughs at no-one & himself.

I see that there is now a different photograph of George Street – without Weatherspoon’s.
