St Patrick’s Day snowfall dusts Brighton and Hove

Snow has dusted Brighton and Hove with some settling in the hillier parts this morning (Saturday 17 March).

The Met Office issued a yellow snow and ice warning for a wide area including Brighton and Hove.

The severe weather warning stretches from early this morning through to Monday.

The official forecaster said: “A band of rain will turn more widely to snow early Saturday morning followed by scattered snow showers through the remainder of the day.

“These showers may become more prolonged, particularly during the evening.”

The chief forecaster said that accumulations of 1cm to 3cm were likely, with as much as 5cm to 10cm on higher ground.

The chief forecaster added: “Strong easterly winds will lead to drifting of snow. Marked wind chill will be another feature of the weather.”

The Met Office also warned: “Any melting of lying snow will lead to an ice risk on untreated surfaces on Saturday morning and night.

“Travel delays on roads with some stranded vehicles and passengers, along with delayed or cancelled rail and air travel is possible.

“Power cuts may occur. Damage to trees or other structures increases the chance that power cuts may occur.

“Some injuries from slips and falls are possible on icy surfaces.

“Snow showers are likely to continue throughout Sunday, with an increased chance that longer spells of snow will affect some areas.

“Southern and eastern regions look most vulnerable overnight and early on Sunday.”

The chief forecaster said: “A second dose of unusually cold air will be in place across southern Britain, bringing with it the risk of snow for many.

“Amounts of snow will be variable, but typically 1cm to 4cm in northern areas and 3cm to 8cm further south.”
