Annual summer crackdown on drink and drug drivers under way

Five more offenders have been sentenced by a Brighton court after the annual Christmas crackdown on drink and drug driving.

Furniture remover Karl Tugwell, 33, of Lynchet Close, Brighton, was arrested in Hollingdean Road, Brighton, on Monday 4 December.

He was charged with driving after having taken cocaine, driving while disqualified and driving with no insurance.

At Brighton Magistrates’ Court he was banned from driving for a year and ordered to carry out 120 hours of unpaid work as part of a 12-month community order. He was also ordered to pay £85 costs and an £85 victim surcharge.

Mateusz Cieslak, 30, a deliveryman, of The Drive, Hove, was arrested in Old Shoreham Road, Brighton, on New Year’s Day (Monday 1 January).

He was charged with driving after having taken ecstasy and with cannabis in his system.

Cieslak was banned from driving for two years at Worthing Magistrates’ Court and ordered to carry out 40 hours of unpaid work as part of a 12-month community order. He was also ordered to pay £85 costs and an £85 victim surcharge.

Matthew Goddard, 26, a mechanic, of Spiro Close, Pulborough, was arrested in Whitehawk Way, Brighton, on Saturday 16 December. He was charged with driving after having taken cocaine.

He was banned from driving for a year at Brighton Magistrates’ Court last month. He was also ordered to pay a £40 fine, £50 costs and a £30 victim surcharge.

Mounir Rahma, 26, a student, of Hamfrith Road, in Stratford, east London, was arrested in East Street, Brighton, on New Year’s Day. He was charged with failing to provide a specimen of breath for analysis.

He was given a one-year driving ban at Brighton Magistrates’ Court and ordered to pay a £180 fine, £400 costs and a £30 victim surcharge.

Admin assistant Natasha Meades, 42, of John Street, Lewes, was arrested for drink driving in South Coast Road, Peacehaven, also on New Year’s Day.

She was charged with driving with 157 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of her blood – almost twice the 80mg limit.

At Brighton Magistrates’ Court she was banned from driving for 18 months. She was also ordered to pay a £120 fine, £85 costs and a £30 victim surcharge.

The five offenders were among 195 people who were arrested during the month-long campaign, with 113 of them now convicted in court.

Sussex Police said that the rest had been charged, released under investigation or released without charge.
