Brighton landlord ordered to carry out repairs

A Brighton landlord has been served with an enforcement notice for letting a building in a conservation area fall into disrepair.

Harwood Properties has been ordered to carry out extensive repairs at 16 York Place, Brighton.

The work includes removing what Brighton and Hove City Council described as a huge hoarding outside the property.

The council said: “A tangle of branches obscures the building at the back and the front has a huge hoarding outside with vegetation growing out of the historic cobble-fronted wall.

“The building itself is within the Valley Gardens Conservation Area which includes the Royal Pavilion and is part of a parade of shops with residential above.”

Harwood must repaint all the external timberwork, re-install the shopfront and remove overgrown vegetation.

Martin Randall, head of planning and public protection at the council, said: “This building has been empty for a number of years and its condition has seriously deteriorated.

“The property and its garden has become an eyesore and are in quite a prominent position, next to City College.

“Planning proposals for the building have so far been refused but we will work with the owners to bring forward a scheme that fits with the building and the area.”

The enforcement notice comes into effect on Wednesday 1 June and the owner will have three months from then to carry out the work.
