Snails to hit streets of Brighton and Hove next weekend

Snails will be following in the footsteps of the Snowdogs this Saturday as Martlets’ latest trail around Brighton and Hove opens.

The giant snails, each decorated by an artist and sponsored by a local business, will have their very own team of carers who will be out and about every weekend to help visitors to the event.

Known as Route Masters, to tie-in with the travel related idea of the Snailway, these volunteers will be on hand to answer questions, explain how and where to find all of the sculptures, download the App and generally ensure that everyone taking part enjoys their visit.

Georgia Ellick, People Services Advisor, Martlets Hospice said: “Our volunteer Route Masters are generously donating their time this autumn to look after our gorgeous giant snails.

“Keep an eye out for their snazzy orange fleeces every Thursday – Sunday across central Brighton.

“Representing Martlets, they will be helping visitors navigate the trail and learn more about the stories and artists behind these wonderful sculptures.

“You can also ask them to help you download our brilliant Snailway App, take a snailfie with your favourite gastropod and hear more about the life changing hospice care that Martlets provide to the local community.”

The Route Masters have been sponsored by Snailspace sponsor, Brighton Palace Pier. Anne Ackord, CEO of The Brighton Pier Group said: “It’s a delight to help support the Route Masters volunteers again this year as they begin to get the snails up and running.

“The volunteers were fantastic last time and really helped the pier’s visitors to make the most of their experience. The volunteers were also fantastic at helping to spread the word of Martlets Hospice and all the wonderful services they provide.

Snailspace Route Master David Packham said: “The hospice is such an essential charity for our city, so the more interest you can generate in it the better and this project is a great way to do that. It is absolutely vital that we raise funds for it and the care it provides to local people.

“I’ve not volunteered for the Martlets before but I’m really looking forward to doing this, especially getting out and about at weekends and helping people enjoy the city.”
