The body of a man found in the sea at Brighton on Saturday (25 June) has been identified.

He was 74-year old John Donovan, of Hampshire Court, Upper St James’s Street, Brighton.

Police were called to Brighton beach late on Saturday afternoon to reports of the man’s body floating in the sea near Portland Place.

He had been seen to enter the sea from a nearby groyne for reasons not yet established, Sussex Police said.

Members of the public brought the body ashore at about 5.30pm where paramedics tried to resuscitate Mr Donovan.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

An inquest will be held in due course

The body of another man which was recovered from the sea at about 3.25pm on Saturday close to Brighton Marina has yet to be identified.

Members of the public informed the emergency services when the body was spotted about 150 yards east of Brighton Marina.

The local coastguard assisted in bringing the body to the shore.

The body is that of a white man and appears to have been in the water for some time.

Police are not treating either death as suspicious and said that there was no reason to believe that the two incidents were in any way connected.
