Brighton teenager dies in holiday crash

A teenage girl from Brighton and her father have been killed in a minibus crash while on holiday.

Caisie Muller, 17, a student at City College Brighton and Hove, died in the crash in Jamaica.

Her brother Owen, 15, also from Brighton, was hurt when the family’s minibus crashed head on into a pick-up truck between Kingston and Montego Bay.

Caisie and Owen’s father Gary Bamford, 49, of Ludlow, Shropshire, died in the accident, as did his ex-partner Kathleen Rawlinson, 45, from Windermere, Cumbria, and a family friend, Talei Jones, from Canada.

Miss Rawlinson was confined to a wheelchair as a result of injuries that she had suffered in a car accident in Spain.

Miss Rawlinson’s 25-year-old daughter, Josie, was injured in the collision and is in a serious but stable condition in hospital in Jamaica.

Her partner, a 22-year-old man from Windermere, suffered minor injuries as did Owen.

The accident happened on Sunday (31 July) shortly after midnight Jamaican time, Cumbria Police said.

In a statement a family member said: “We are deeply saddened by the loss of our family. They will be greatly missed.”

City College principal Phil Frier said: “Students and staff at City College were dismayed to hear about the death of one of our 17-year-old students, Caisie Muller.

“Caisie was in the middle of a two-year Diploma in Art course specialising in photography and had ambitions for a career in illustration in art and design using her photographic skills.

“Her tutors knew her as a very popular student who was kind, thoughtful and supportive towards her classmates.

“She was clearly a very able and high-performing girl who would have clearly gone on to greater things.

“It is such a tragedy when a young life is cut short in this way and our feelings and sympathy are for remaining family at this time.”
