Two crashes on the A27 this morning within minutes of each other have brought the road to a near halt in both directions.

Four vehicles reportedly crashed on the A27 eastbound near Patcham at about 8am, and a motorbike and car then crashed westbound near Falmer at about 8.30am.

There are now queues back to Southwick eastbound and back to Lewes westbound.

A police spokesman said: “The A27 near Brighton suffered traffic disruption both east and westbound early on Thursday (16 May) due to two collisions occurring within 15 minutes of each other.

“Two of three lanes eastbound were blocked some 300 yards beyond the junction with Devil’s Dyke Road, and at 8.15am another crash, nvolving several vehicles, possibly including a motorcycle, occurred westbound near Coldean.

“This led to carriageways being closed and traffic being diverted onto the A270 Lewes Road near Falmer.

“The eastbound A27, where a collision involved only minor injuries, re-opened at around 9.30am. Westbound, where a motorcyclist sustained serious but not life-threatening injuries, the inside lane currently remains closed, but the outer lane was re-opened at 8.55am.”

A spokesman for South East Ambulance Coast Service said: “We were called at 8am to reports of an road traffic collision on the A27 at the start of the A23 involving three cars in which a man had suffered injuries including an arm injury.

“We dispatched two cars and one ambulance to the scene. The man with an arm injury was treated at the scene before being  taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital.

“Shortly afterwards, at 8.15am, we were called to another road traffic collision on the A27 near Falmer involving a motorbike and a car.

“The motorcyclist was suffering from neck and back pain and they were treated before being taken to the Royal Sussex for further treatment.”

Brighton and Hove Buses tweeted: “Due to an accident by Falmer causing delays, all 28, 29 and 29B services are terminating and starting from the Old Steine in Brighton.

“Our 25 services are operating between Lewes Road Garage and the Universities only. Our 25X services are operating between the Old Steine and the Universities only.”
