Hyde to be quizzed over reduced parking and higher blocks at Westows development

The derelict complex in Hove that includes the old Westow’s children’s play centre has been set on fire for the second time in three months.

The blaze at the Westerman complex on Friday evening is being treated as arson by East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service.

Four fire engines were sent to the site which was also targeted by arsonists in March.

The old light industrial workshops, formerly also the Cliffords car parts premises, are due to be demolished as the site’s owner, Hyde Housing Group, prepares to build 104 homes there.

Hyde bought the one-and-a-half-acre site last autumn for just over £7 million from Cross Stone Securities.

The fire service said: “East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service are treating a fire at a derelict industrial building in Hove as deliberate.

“The service was called at 7.18pm today (Friday 14 June).

“At the height of the incident four fire engines were at the scene on School Road.

“Crews used breathing apparatus and main jets.

“As of 8.30pm three fire engines remain but the fire is now believed to be out.

“There are no reports of injuries.”

Earlier the fire service said: “East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service were called at 7.18pm today (Friday 14 June) to reports of smoking coming from a derelict industrial building in Hove.

“A number of repeat 999 calls were received from members of the public.

“As of 8pm four fire engines are at the scene on School Road.

“Crews are using breathing apparatus and main jets.

“Sussex Police have been requested to help with road management.

“There are no reports of injuries.

“Locals are being asked to avoid the area and keep doors and windows closed due to the smoke.”
