Hundreds of staff at the University of Sussex are on strike today in protest at plans to cut about a hundred jobs.
The action has been called by the The University and College Union (UCU), which says the action was prompted by a refusal by the university to agree to talks or lift the threat of compulsory redundancies.
However, the university contests this, saying the decision was taken the day before further talks were due to take place.
Yesterday, hundreds of students passed a vote of no confidence in the university’s management, and demanded the reinstatement of the Sussex Six, students who have been suspended following the occupation of university property.
Staff and students have been on the picket line this morning since 7am.
Update: During the course of the day, the six students were reinstated.
