Brighton Aldridge Community Academy students celebrate GCSE results

More Brighton and Hove students achieved “standard” and “strong” passes in both GCSE maths and English than last year.

An analysis found that 69 per cent of students achieved a standard pass – grade 4 or above under the new system – in both English and maths, compared with 68 per cent in 2018.

And 48 per cent achieved a strong pass – grade 5 or above – in both subjects, up from 47 per cent last year.

The figures are contained in a report to Brighton and Hove City Council’s Children, Young People and Skills Committee.

It said that there 2,211 pupils took GCSEs this year, compared with 2,169 last year.

But according to a new measure, known as Attainment 8, standards appeared to slip slightly, although the council said that this year’s score and last year’s score were not strictly comparable.

Attainment 8 measures a school’s average results, focusing on English, maths and other “English Baccalaureate” subjects such as sciences, computer science, languages, history and geography.

The report said: “Provisional results shared by schools indicate Attainment 8 is 47.7 compared to last year’s result of 48.0 although these figures are not directly comparable.

“Results in English and maths combined have increased by one percentage point.”

Results at A level suggest that more Brighton and Hove students are achieving higher grades.

There were 5,138 A-level entries and 31.2 per cent of the grades were A* or A while 61.7 per cent were A* to B. The national averages were 25.2 per cent and 51.1 per cent respectively.

More than two thirds of A levels were taken at BHASVIC, with a further 24 per cent sat at Varndean College.

Most of the remaining 11 per cent were taken at Cardinal Newman with the others at Blatchington Mill, the Brighton Aldridge Community Academy (BACA), Hove Park or the Portslade Aldridge Community Academy (PACA).

Brighton and Hove A-level results

A* or A 31.2 per cent

The report is due to be discussed by the council’s Children, Young People and Skills Committee at Hove Town Hall next Monday (16 September). The meeting is scheduled to start at 4pm and should be open to the public.
