Surrey 228-7 beat Sussex Sharks 157 by 71 runs
Sussex hopes of making it to Lord’s for the final of the Clydesdale Bank 40-over competition were dashed by Surrey at The Oval today (Sunday 4 September).
Rain delayed the start of play and led to a reduction in the number of overs to 24.
Rory Hamilton-Brown won the toss and was vindicated in his decision to bat, with Ben Brown dropping him early on, and Chris Nash dropping Stephen Davies.
Hamilton-Brown’s own 24 runs were eclipsed by Tom Maynard’s impressive 60 from just 33 deliveries.
Both of their wickets were taken by Chris Liddle who also claimed Zander de Bruyn’s for 43 as he notched up figures of 4-38 off five overs.
The first six Surrey batsmen all made double figures as the home side cruised to 228 for 7.
By contrast only three Sussex batsmen managed double figures during a downbeat innings which saw them removed for 157 in 22 overs.
They were Chris Nash (55), Ed Joyce (47) and Wayne Parnell (20).
Surrey’s Chris Schofield took 4-22 as the Sharks were well and truly bested.
His side now face Somerset at Lord’s in the final on Saturday 17 September.
