HONEYBLOOD + PORRIDGE RADIO + HANYA – CONCORDE 2, BRIGHTON 30.10.19

We headed on down to the ever popular Concorde 2 in Brighton in order to check out a trio of bands.

First up were Hanya who are a decent Brighton act who have received some significantly positive press attention in their short career.

With a sound best described as shoegaze, their songs revolve (or maybe better put as ‘swirl’) around the delicately heavy vocals of Heather Sherret – who would have been happily at home singing dreamy 60’s pop classics in a bar on Sunset Strip if she’d been born 40 years earlier.

Understated but still commanding attention, this is admirable stuff. Catch them in Brighton at their new ‘Dream Wife’ EP launch gig at The Richmond on Wednesday 27th November with support from Langkamer and World News – tickets HERE.

Hanya setlist:
‘Cement’
‘Honey’
‘Song 4’
‘Radio’
‘Hourglass’
‘Dream Wife’

Next up were Porridge Radio, a band who work hard to ensure you can’t neatly place them in one single genre. As the set progresses you can hear a multitude of influences beneath the surface of their sound which meld to great effect and establish their own brand of pop-punk.

There are some striking harmonies reminiscent of The Cranberries, but with a more Pixies influenced baseline. It’s a little bit punk, a little bit metal, and comes with more than a little bit of angst.

“Don’t touch – I’m afraid of feeling alive!” screams lead singer Dana Margolin, throwing everything into her vocal performance.

There’s softly dancing riffs mixed with a far darker intensity which evokes an emotional response and we reckon we’ll be hearing a lot more from this band.

Heading up tonight’s bill is the art-school-pop-rock of Honeyblood – now a solo project of Scottish songwriter Stina Tweeddale. Tonight was gig number five of an eight date UK tour in support of the recently released eleven track third album ‘In Plain Sight’ which you can snap up on transparent orange vinyl HERE.

The band’s live show neatly echoes their lo-fi recording style, with Stina’s punchy vocals clearly out front above the guitars that provide solid foundations for an engaging show.

The crowd’s Singalong favourite seems to be the 2019-released ‘The Third Degree’ – proving that Stina’s decision to go it alone hasn’t dampened the regard for Honeyblood amongst fans.
